Honorable Mentions: Before Sunrise, A Goofy Movie, Heavyweights
Tommy Boy has and always will be a staple in my family. It’s funny, it has endless quotable film lines and it features the iconic Chris Farley, who left this earth way too soon. I think the movie works so well due to the chemistry of Farley and David Spade onscreen. Being friends and castmates on SNL certainly helped the onscreen pairing.
While the movie is somewhat cliched and hated by critics, I can’t help but love it. As a kid, when the family first saw it, we became destined to share the gospel of Tommy Boy. Anytime we would show the movie to a new friend or family member, we would try and gauge their reaction, almost as if it was some sort of initiation into our little club.
With a year featuring this film, as well as the honorable mentions listed above, it was certainly a hard choice to make. Let’s just chalk it up to the fact that this movie was a big part of my childhood and it’s appeal (for me) doesn’t waver.
