Sticking it to the Man in 2003

– School of Rock –

Honorable Mentions: The Italian Job, The Last Samurai, The Recruit

A friend once told me that if a movie was ever made about my life, Jack Black should play the role of me, citing his role as wannabe Rock God Dewey Finn, “very much Corey”. Thoughts from those of you who know me?

This movie is now over 15 years old but I never tire of it. I remember seeing it with my girlfriend in high school and just loving the whole thing. The movie is fun and it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time, it never comes off as a straight “kids movie.” Its a movie about music that just so happens to feature really talented young musicians.

I think it carries a really positive message for our day and age as well. It teaches kids that its okay to be who you are, whether its an effeminate boy who wants to be the band’s stylist or the shy heavy-set girl who likes food AND wants to be a rock star, Dewey tells the kids “ok,” without trying to change who they are. I think that’s really profound.

Overall, if you like seeing kids do something well, you like laughing and you love music, I think you can find something about this to enjoy.

ICONIC LINE:
Dewey Finn:
The Man. Oh, you don’t know the Man? He’s everywhere. In the White House, down the hall… Ms. Mullins, she’s the Man. And the Man ruined the ozone, and he’s burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamu and put her in a chlorine tank! Okay? And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man, it was called rock ‘n roll. But guess what? Oh no. The Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV! So don’t waste your time trying to make anything cool, or pure, or awesome, ’cause the Man is just gonna call you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favor and just GIVE UP!
